Boulder Youth Body Alliance
The Boulder Youth Body Alliance (BYBA) is a youth-driven, peer education program that empowers teens to create social change around the ideas, beliefs and messages that lead to eating disorders and body dissatisfaction. BYBA is a program of The Body Positive, a grass-roots, community-based organization, who is one of very few organizations in the country looking at the issues of size discrimination, building body esteem, and preventing eating problems in youth. Understanding that messages are strongest when delivered through real stories from role models and peers, teen leaders teach their peers how to combat body dissatisfaction, and deal with: myths about dieting, health, and weight; school policies that promote weight loss instead of health and fitness; messages about sexual identity; pressures of acculturation; sexual harassment and abuse; and discrimination against fat people. Additionally, by including youth in all aspects of program development for BYBA, we have created a successful educational model that is shaped by listening to the concerns of the people we intend to serve. Our teens are approved speakers through the Boulder Valley School District’s Health Education Committee. BYBA offers presentations in classrooms, for staff and faculty and parents. If you are interested in having BYBA give a presentation, please call the Director, Carmen Cool, at 303-440-5775.
