PERSONAL STATEMENT:

If you have had treatment with other mental health professionals, therapy is likely to have a different feel with me.  Founded on 25 years of working with eating disorders, especially more difficult cases, I use a more directed, psycho-educational approach.  This is blended with experiential techniques to increase awareness of your emotional life. The methods of examining thinking errors which have been employed successfully over the past thirty years in treating eating disorders are frequently useful.  However, understanding the role of feelings is essential to recovery.

I conceptualize the recovery from an eating disorder like the hub and spokes of a wheel.  Each spoke represents an element of the recovery process needed to get the recovery rolling. There are spokes that deal with feelings, nutrition, interpersonal relations, mindful eating, social influences, and body image among others.  We will spend much of our time getting the spokes in place.

Personal Philosophy:

I received my Master's degree in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology from Naropa University in May 2007, during which time I completed my internship at the Naropa University Counseling Center.  I am working towards my LPC.  I am most passionate about working with populations with eating disorders and identity/oppression issues related to diversity.  Through working with individuals, couples, and groups, I developed a strong interest in counseling people with eating disorders and issues of diversity and oppression.   In addition, I have helped people with depression and anxiety, relationship issues, and self esteem/self identity.  My style is a combination of Gestalt therapy and creative techniques such as visualizations and somatic experiences.   My role as a therapist is to help you use your own unique mixture of personal awareness, curiosity, and practical capabilities to find balance and happiness within yourself.   I hold a fundamental belief that all individuals possess the inner knowledge needed to heal and grow.  My function is to empower you in your journey of personal discovery.

The focus is on day-to-day decisions that lead to an experience of self-care. My approach to health and well-being is weight-neutral, encouraging movement towards working in positive partnership with your body.  With a style that is relational and mindfulness-based, my commitment is to helping you find your own internal wisdom about your body and your life. I lead workshops and groups, including a group at La Luna Center, an outpatient eating disorder treatment center, and am a guest teacher in many local colleges and universities.

PERSONAL STATEMENT:

I have had the great pleasure and honor of running a private practice in Boulder for 10 years.  During that time I have worked with literally hundreds of girls (both adolescents and young adults) who have struggled with the spectrum of eating and body issues.  My approach for treatment is this...many of us have learned to use superficial means (like food, exercise, alcohol, etc.) to medicate, check out or not feel.  In treatment, I focus on the underlying root causes.  Although I believe this approach is initially more intense and has slower initial change, it has proven to produce long lasting change in all areas of my cients’ lives.  If you are interested in doing what you need to make lasting change, we are likely a good fit for each other.

Personal Statement:

Eating disorders are not simply eating problems.  Psychotherapy is essential to help clients deal with the real underlying issues that drive the behavior.  But healthy food and appropriate diet goals do play a big part in the recovery process.  Individualized nutrition therapy can enhance the process; however, it cannot stand alone.  Clients should also be working with a therapist, or with a treatment team.  I welcome patients struggling with binge eating issues, as well as bulimics and anorexics who are working towards recovery.  I am especially happy to work with older women, who may feel left out, with so much focus on adolescent eating disorder treatment.

The Boulder County Eating Disorders Coalition operates in partnership with

Healthy Youth Alliance of Boulder County and Parent Engagement Network.
